The Boston Tea Party

- 342 chest of tea were thrown off ships into the Boston Harbour
- The Boston Tea Party is important because of both the British and American responses to the actions that followed the tea party
- The British were furious with the actions of the colonists and needed to impose a "punishment"
The Stamp Act
- Date: March 22, 1765
- Creator: Benjamin Franklin
- The new tax was imposed on all American colonists and required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper used. Ship's papers, legal documents, licenses, newspaper, other publications, and even playing cards were taxed
- The money collected by the Stamp Act was to be used to help pay the costs of defending and protecting the American frontier
Royal Proclamation
- Date: October 7, 1763
- Creator: King George III
- The Royal Proclamation set out guidelines for European settlement and Proclamation prevented the colonist from expanding
- The British issued a proclamation, mainly intended to conciliate the Indians by checking the encroachment of settler on their lands
- Since the proclamation, it has become one of the cornerstones of Native American law in the United States and Canada
